In the Mahuri team we aim to build on from the foundations of literacy acquisition established in the Tipu team. We approach literacy via a variety of avenues grouping according to ability and needs. Students engage in learning experiences based upon current topics and texts that relate to our inquiry.
The teaching of Numeracy remains a focus in the Mahuri team. We also teach within the other strands of Geometry, Measurement, Algebra and Statistics throughout the year (these are a minor focus). Our timetables provide an hour for quality learning time. Resources to build on and enrich programmes will continue to be purchased or made by parent helpers.
Planning for the teaching of inquiry learning is a major focus in the Mahuri team. We follow the Ashgrove Inquiry Model of:
- Question and Plan
- Gather and Filter
- Create and Communicate
Teachers collaborate together as a team to plan learning experiences in Science, Social Science and Technology. Planning and preparation will be shared according to strengths and interests. Implementation of learning will be simultaneous with both hubs, allowing for cross hub support and sharing of resources. Where possible, Te Reo and sign language is integrated as part of daily practice.
Health & Physical Education
Health and Physical education continues to be an important component of our programmes for 2016. We have timetabled skill teaching lessons taken each alternate Thursday/Friday by the North Canterbury Sports and Recreation Trust as well as daily fitness programmes. Health units will be covered throughout the year with Kia Kaha being our focus in Term 2 and Nutrition / First Aid / Puberty the focus in Term 4. During Term 4 we also conduct our annual Safe Cycling unit where Year 6 children in our team get to experience cycling safely in a variety of contexts on the roads surrounding our school as well as taking part in drills in the school grounds.
We have a whole school focus on the value of Ashgrove STAR - Service, Trust, Attitude, Responsibility and Respect.
Visual art may be integrated with the current topic or taught as a separate curriculum area depending on the skills needing to be covered.
Music, Dance and Drama
Students are provided with experiences in music, dance and drama throughout the year. This is often integrated in our major inquiry unit, but can also be taught separately.
Many aspects of these disciplines are covered in daily programmes and weekly planning. The Mahuri team participate enthusiastically in fitness regularly - a great way to invigorate ourselves for our work ahead.
